Shadow Work

Updated: Mar 10, 2023

Shadow work is an exploration of the “shadow” or hidden self – the part of our psyche that often lies beneath the surface, or in the unconscious. The idea is that when we begin to explore and come to terms with our dark side – our fears, vulnerabilities, insecurities and so on – we can heal our wounds and find greater balance and authenticity.

In this blog, let’s explore why shadow work is so important and how we can go about our own shadow work journey.

First of all, why is shadow work so important? Generally, when people don’t look at and accept the various aspects of themselves, whether it be the good or bad sides, they can become stuck and unable to move on in their emotional growth. All sides of ourselves are essential for a balanced, healthy way of being. It’s important to recognize and accept the parts we don’t like about ourselves in order to move forwards and grow from them.

So how do we begin our own shadow work journey? Well, the first step is to get in touch with our emotions. This can involve writing in a journal, or engaging in creative activities like art, or talking to a therapist. Once we’ve become more comfortable with accessing our emotions, we can begin to explore our unconscious. This can mean delving into our dream world, exploring childhood traumas, or connecting with our intuition.

The next step is to take an honest look at our behaviour. This involves being honest with ourselves about the ways we’ve acted and reacted to the world around us. We can also examine our relationships and analyse any patterns we spot so as to understand more about our own needs and behaviours.

The final step is to learn how to own our shadows. This looks like learning how to accept ourselves despite all the imperfections, and learning how to love ourselves just as we are.

Shadow work can be difficult, but the rewards are worth the effort. It can help us feel more grounded and connected to our true selves, allowing us to finally accept and express ourselves fully. If you want to embark on your own shadow work journey, just remember to take things slowly and be gentle on yourself.

Good luck!
